The Truth Behind Eyebrow Transplant
For women, who are tired of drawing on their eyebrows with specially formulated eyebrow pencils, there is good news. There are now ways in which they can have natural hair on their eyebrows, giving them a thicker, fuller and more natural appearance than the ones they drew on. Eyebrow transplants or eyebrow restoration is quickly becoming an increasingly sought after cosmetic surgery. More and more women are opting for the procedure that is often touted as safe, with guaranteed long term results.
What are Eyebrow Transplants?
Eyebrow transplants take cosmetic surgery to a whole new level. The procedure for this transplant is much like that of any kind of hair transplant. The procedure intends to permanently transplant hair on a scraggly brow. The procedure may also be used for those who wish to customize their eyebrows’ appearance. For men and women who have lost their eyebrows in accidents or fires, or those who never had enough hair on their brows to make a decent eyebrow, this procedure is a life altering one. However, the introduction of this surgery has also led to a spate of incidences in which people simply want to alter their eyebrows or make them look like a celebrity.

Who Can Get an Eyebrow Transplant?
Anyone, who wishes to restore their eyebrows or customize them, can get an eyebrow transplant. The eyebrow transplant can be performed on you if you:
- Have a genetic predisposition to have little or no hair on their eyebrows,
- Have damaged eyebrows due to electrolysis or other hair removal procedures,
- Have a glandular condition that prevents normal growth of hair on your face and other parts of the body,
- Have a trauma due to an accident or a surgery, or
- Have damaged your eyebrows due to over plucking.
How is the Procedure Performed?
The transplanted hair are collected from other part of the patient’s body. The donor hair usually come from the scalp. They are then surgically transplanted into the hair follicles of the patient. Very tiny incisions are made into the skin. These incisions have to be at the angle that mimics the natural growth of eyebrow hairs. Once transplanted, these hairs grow naturally in the body and have to be regularly trimmed or shaped. Since the natural occurrence of eyebrow hair is one or sometimes two hairs in a follicle, the hair is transplanted that way only. This gives the brow a more natural appearance.
Could There Be Any Risks?
As with any medical procedure, there are chances of running a risk in an eyebrow transplant as well. An eyebrow transplant is an extremely delicate procedure which requires the doctors to practice extreme caution while making the transplants. Each of the donor hairs has to go into an individual follicle – a process which requires extreme precision. Making the incisions is a very important part of the procedure. A shallow incision could prevent the graft from being accepted by the body. A deep incision could cause scarring. An incision which is not made at the right angle could cause the transplant to appear unnatural. The grafts are microscopic enough to give any good doctor a run for their money. There is also the risk of getting an infection. In rare cases, the body may reject a graft. However, since the grafts are created from the patient’s own hairs, this occurrence is really very rare. Owing to the delicate and precise nature of the procedure, it is recommended that the transplant should only be attempted by very well trained surgeons.
What About Recovery?
The procedure is performed under a mild sedative and is essentially painless. Depending on the number of hairs that are to be transplanted, the surgery could take anywhere from a half hour to two hours. Once the surgery is complete, you will need some time to recover. The recovery period is painless too, but during the first few days, you may experience some slight crusting around your new transplants. You may also experience some mild redness around the hairs. This should usually fade by the end of the first week. Other than these slight inconveniences, you should be able to get back to work.
