All you need to know about Makeup Expiration

We probably think only food items can have expiration dates and most of us will be shocked to know that things like mascaras, nail paints, etc have specific expiration dates.  Sure, old foundation may not make one sick, but it is most likely to cause break-outs or irritation. It is essential to find out how long our beauty products can last. The following will help us realise when it’s time to move on.

Date

Cosmetic companies don’t really require to put expiration dates on products, but a few brands do it, so you can start by taking a look at these. Some cosmetics have the months, and years printed on the necessary package. Others have a symbol of a jar with an open lid, number, and letter. If there is an open lid then it probably means the expiration date applies once the product is opened or the seal of the product is removed.Mid it’s written in letters then it is M for months and Y for years.

The following are a few products used daily by which one can figure out when to stop:

1.    Mascara.



Shelf life: 2-3 months.

Whenever you start noticing that your mascara is getting clumpy or begins to smells weird, toss it out immediately. Do not share your mascara, germs are guaranteed to spread. However if you must, use disposable applicators.

2. Foundation and concealer.

Shelf life: 6-12 months.

Incase your concealer has started to separate into various layers or the color has started to lighten, time to buy a new one. Keep it out of sunlight. The UV rays might destroy preservatives, which will make your products get spoilt much faster.

3. Lip sticks/ gloss.

Shelf-life: 2 years lipstick, 1 year gloss.

If your lipstick has become dry or if your gloss is becoming extra sticky, they’ve probably gone bad and their time has run out. Testing shades at a counter is fine but refrain from ever applying directly from the tube. Make sure a salesperson disinfects it and only then apply it with a disposable applicator.

4. Nail paint.

Shelf life: 1-2 years.

Suppose you notice Your nail polish turning extra gooey or if it has separated into different layers and refuses to blend after a quick shake, it’s now time to let it go for good. Use a nail polish thinner that is affordable and increases longest invite of your nail paint.

5. Eyeshadow, blush.

Shelf life: 2 years.

Expired eye shadow or blush powders will be more dry and way more flaky than the new ones. Also try and invest in a cosmetic sanitiser and a brush shampoo that will clean your makeup and tools on a daily basis and also prevent both bacteria growth and breakouts in them.

6. Perfumes.

Shelf life: 8-10 years.

Perfumes that will start to smell a little different or if they become light in colour, then they are definitely expired and you need to throw them away. What you need to know about perfumes is that Bright light oxidise them, changing their chemicals to smell musty and that too faster. Hence, store them in cool and dark places so that they last longer.

7. Lotions.

Shelf life: 2 years.

When you notice a change in colour of your lotion, cream or if the scent changes then this is a perfect give away of an expired product. Next time you purchase one, go for one with a pump rather than a jar, because it tends to be less prone to airborne bacteria and will last more.
